When I need a little “me” time, sometimes there is just nothing better than getting lost in a good book. Throw in a cup of coffee and I’m good for an afternoon. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with Historical Fiction.
It all started when I read The Nightingale over Christmas Break. HOLY SMOKES! Talk about an intense, beautiful and moving story! After I finished, I was reaching for whatever historical fiction novels I could get my hands on. It’s not always easy to find the time to read, but when I get on a roll, I can knock out a book or two a week.
On our last family trip, I managed to knock out three books, and I’m still going.
Here’s what I’m recommending right now:
- The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah – It’s long but a good one. I was completely invested and genuinely sad when it was over.
- Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate – This is one of those stories where you just can’t believe no one caught on to what what happening or ever tried to intervene.
- Lilac Girls by Martha Hall – The story of three different women during WWII, this book takes you on an unforgettable journey.
- The Storyteller by Jodi Picault – This one I couldn’t put down. There are several stories weaved into one and I loved getting several different perspectives.
- The Kite Runner by Khaled Houseini – I know, I know! I’m probably the last person to read this book. But if you haven’t read it, get on it!! It’s a beautiful, heart-breaking read.
- Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay-
You’ll notice that most of these are WWII novels. I made a list of similar books after I finished The Nightingale and have been checking them off one by one. Next up on my list is The Alice Network, which I’ve heard great things about.
What are your favorite Historical Fiction novels? My goal was 30 books on 2018 and I’ve got 14 more to go!
