Healthy Snack Ideas (when you’re trying to get fit but you really like ice cream)

April 24, 2017 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

With my current quest for health and fitness, I have had to totally revamp my daily snacks. I didn’t eat horribly before, but let’s just say I’ve never met a doughnut or pumpkin muffin that I didn’t like.

The first week or so I was at a complete loss. Sure I knew to eat fruits and vegetables but that wasn’t really cutting it. So I turned to the Internet and Facebook for suggestions and have compiled a list of my favorites for those of you who might be in the same boat as me.

Dairy

Cheese – I mean, hello. You don’t want to overdo it but those snack sized portions are perfect in a pinch.

Fairlife Chocolate Milk – Did you know that chocolate milk can be a great post workout snack/drink? Stay away from the ones with lots of “extras” and sugar. Fairlife is awesome because it has 13g of protein!

Greek Yogurt – You want to watch the sugar content on these, but for a quick snack, it can be an easy grab.

Protein

My trainer at bootcamp has requested that I incorporate more protein in my diet, which is challenging because I am truly a carb girl. Cutting back is proving to be a struggle. But I’ve done a little research and here are some protein-filled snacks that work for me.

Chick peas — you can bake your own or you can buy roasted chick peas. I like The Good Bean.

Almonds – I eat them plain but when I need something sweet, I grab the cinnamon glazed ones.

Protein Shake with banana – Burn makes a great protein shake that isn’t chalky at all.

Hard Boiled Eggs – I always forget about these. If you do several in a batch, you’re good for the week.

Other

Avocado Toast – This is my current FAVORITE! I smash up half an avocado on a piece of Dave’s Killer Bread – 21 Grains, toasted. Add a dash of salt (and some cayenne pepper if you want)

Hummus – You name a flavor and there’s probably a hummus flavor to match. I really like the edamame hummus. YUM!

Fruit Salad

Peppers, carrots, cucumber, edamame….like I said veggies are always a good option.

Peanut/Almond Butter – I put them on celery, rice crackers or Dave’s Killer Bread

Homemade Energy  Bars – I need to whip out this recipe. Super tasty AND the kids eat them with no complaints.

I’d love to know what you eat for a healthy snack. I need all the help I can get.
