From Cable to Netflix: New kid shows are both good and bad

September 11, 2013 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

A few months ago, I received a free three month trial to Netflix. Upon activating our account, my son was in awe. He mastered the remote in no time and quickly figured out how to find all the kid shows.

I’ll admit; it’s been a bit of a relief. Netflix has so many options that you can’t find on regular cable. We spent the first few weeks devouring every old school Mickey Mouse option available. Remember Mickey & the Beanstalk? We’ve now seen that at least 40 times (no lie). The Goofy Movie? My daughter was obsessed during one of our rainy weeks.

For most of the summer, I’ve been able to avoid the Rescue Bots, Dora (although she sneaks in on some days), Umi Zoomi and the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. We discovered a delightful show called Oscar’s Oasis and have subsequently watched every episode at least twice. My son also found a PBS Kids show called Justin Time that both he and my daughter like.

But with the good comes the bad. My son asked if he could watch the Woody Woodpecker Show. I immediately said sure. I had vague memories of being entertained by him as a kid.

CAN I TAKE IT BACK? OMG y’all; it’s horrible. I guess they redid it in the early 2000s and it’s JUST. NOT. GOOD. I have to limit it because I can only take so much and honestly, I don’t want him to act like some of the characters.

That’s been the trouble. Shows I remember as wonderful are absolutely not. We’ve tested Felix and Garfied and even Caspar the Friendly Ghost. Some I like. Some I don’t.

We’ve enjoyed our summer of Netflix. I’m not sure what my son is going to do next week when he tries to turn it on and it doesn’t work. I guess we’ll go back to cable. Maybe we’ll splurge and keep Netflix too.

One thing is for sure. There will be far less TV. I wonder if they’ll notice.
