Tonight I have a little rant. It’s been talked about millions of different times in a varity of ways by many people. But tonight, it’s me and I only bring this up because it’s recently been brewing again in conversations.
It really grates on every nerve in my body when I hear people bitch and moan about not getting specific opportunties from their blog or business. Yes, it sucks to be passed over. Yes, it’s frustrating if you’ve been trying really hard, (hear that people, you do actually have to TRY) but it’s life. And as we all learned at a young age, life isn’t fair.
I am not what I consider a “full time” blogger, that is, I don’t blog every day. I am not trying to make my living from my blog or any expertise I might have to offer. I have chosen to have a full time job outside the home and my blog is a past time. But that being said, I still admire and admittedly, feel a twinge of jealousy when I hear about some of these totally rockin’ events or parties or brand opportunties.
I do not get approached by many companies for my “mommy” wisdom. Do I wish sometimes I would? Do I think it would be flattering? Of course. But I don’t whine about it (out loud and all over the Internet) when I hear others have amazing things come their way. Instead, I focus on the few things that do head my way and feel invigorated that I’ve touched someone and try to figure out other ways I can find some of that satisfaction in helping out a company or person.
Instead of wasting all that negative energy, I wish people would think about a few things:
1) What are YOU doing to be noticed? Are you contacting companies and selling them on why a partnership or project with you would be valueable? What are you offering? What are they offering in return? Think about the specifics.
2) Have you every considered that you might not be the right fit for a company or that they might be looking for a really specific person? I would guess that nine times out of ten, that’s what happens. A company starts a project with a really strong sense of what they want so they go after a target person and if you are outside of their focus, you remain invisible.
I actually had someone say to me once “Wow, I wonder why they chose you. You don’t even blog every day” (with total insinuation that said person does blog every day, therefore should have been chosen over me.) No ma’am, I don’t blog every day but my content is COMPLETELY different than yours, so they obviously were looking for something in particular.
3) What can you do better? What can you do NEXT time? There are LOTS AND LOTS of companies out there who are looking for amazing, talented people to partner with and that could be YOU…if and only if, you stop whining and get off your tuckus to do something about it. The people that I know who are successful or even successfully unsuccessful are working their tails off. They email company after company, day after day. They go back to old contacts and circle around to people who may have said no six months ago.
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!
Opportunities come from hard work. They come from being the perfect match for what a company is looking for. And sometimes, they come from good old fashioned luck.
Seriously people, I speak the truth.
So to all the whiners out there, deal with the guarantee of rejection and get comfortable with it. You’ll be rejected way more than you’ll be accepted, but it’ll help you improve your pitch and strategy.
Ok, I’m done. Please continue with your regularly scheduled blogging.

You go, girl!
Love it!!! We are just getting into this blogging world and we both have outside jobs too. We are blogging for our new business but I think I would have your attitude also. I think you should blog first for fun and to help others and if you get recognition, a good following, or even better…make money blogging then that would be icing on the cake.

Love it!! Words of wisdom right here 🙂
Well said…life is to short to complain…BTW I feel so lucky to know you! You Rock!
I loved this rant.
Did I mention loved it?
Just wanted to be sure (-:
Here here! I'm always surprised at the people who want 100% for 5% effort.
I'm still shocked that there are opportunities associated with blogging at all. I "know" someone that got into blogging just to get ads and sponsors. HELLO. Blogging is writing. It should be something you enjoy and you're fairly good at. At least that's how this naive blogger looks at it.
