Oh cleaning. I wish I had that bug that makes me like to do it. My mother has it. It’s just part of who she is. I hate it. All of it. None of it is cathartic. It’s just a pain.
When the Bug was born, we got a cleaning service to come once a month. Both of us were working and we hated that every weekend we were scrambling to clean when we really wanted to spend time together. The cleaning service keeps us sane by ensuring at least for 24 solid hours a month our house is spotless, well, at least the rooms where the kids don’t go.
But this year, I’m planning on getting my act together. My plan of attack isn’t going to make me enjoy cleaning, but it should help me stay on track.
How am I going to do that you ask? By doing 3 simple things.
1. Setting a timer.
I don’t know who gave me this tip, but it works for me. Every day I set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes, turn on some music and just go. Whatever I get done, I get done. There’s no set objective, I just have to clean the entire time. By the time, I’m done the kitchen or a bathroom is usually spic and span.
2. Making a weekly list.
I find myself doing laundry ALL. THE. TIME. I vowed this year that I’m only going to do it twice a week (unless someone is sick or there’s major stain potential). I can vacuum on the same days, change sheets on the same day, empty litter boxes, etc. Whether it’s grabbing a bottle of or something else, I can squeeze, spray, wipe and go. It helps when I don’t have every chore imaginable in my head. That overwhelms me and I just want to sit in filth and eat ice cream. (That sentence is not entirely true, but not entirely false either.)
3. Getting the kids to help.
Bug is five, so there’s a lot he can do. He can clear the table, wipe down the counter tops, pick up toys and even wash mirrors if I give him a stool. Both kids like to mop, so I should take advantage. Will it be perfect? No, but it’ll be something.
So those are my big ideas for helping keep my house a little cleaner in 2014. What do you do?
