Sometimes it’s okay if your house just #smellsclean

September 30, 2014 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

Let’s be honest. Often times with two kids, two cats and part-time work, I just don’t have the time or energy to do a full fledged, top to bottom cleaning of the house. So I cheat a bit.

I wipe down the tables. I put all the dishes away. I might empty a trash can or two. Then I light a candle.

Yup. I said it. I light a candle.

Mmmm candles #smellsclean

It’s not that my house ever smells bad (except for the room with the kitty litter; that one does indeed smell at times. Oh and I have a young boy, so the guest bath does occasionally smell of urine.) But there is just something about walking into a house with a nice, clean scent that makes me happy. No matter what didn’t get done that day, a relaxing scent makes the house a happier place.

During the fall and winter months, I opt for warm scents like pumpkin, cinnamon and apple. During the spring and summer, I go for a crispy linen smell or something fruitier.

Having candles lit just makes the home feel comfortable, more inviting.

Having someone drop by? I promptly light a candle. A party? Candles everywhere – living room, kitchen, bathroom. Weekend guests? I might even put a plug-in (set to the lowest setting) in the guest bedroom.

I always have them in the house. If I don’t, I get antsy and promptly run to the store to get one.

What about you? What are your tricks to making the house smell clean when you don’t have time to clean it?
