How to Have a Minions Birthday Bash

July 6, 2015 By Ashley 3 Comments

In my house, we say things like “Gato. Doo be. Tahk-a-doh.” as we eat our BANANAS! We speak a little Minion, know the benefits of jelly, and love those little yellow guys to pieces. With our level of Minion love, and the new Minions movie coming out July 10, picking a birthday theme for my two boys (whose birthdays are only days apart) was pretty easy.

MINIONS Bday Bash

BANANAS!
The perfect snack for any Minions birthday party. You can easily dress up plain old bananas with a little help from a black Sharpie. The banana peel is thick enough to handle a little artistic addition, and luckily, Minion faces are pretty easy to draw. Add faces to a few bananas (you might even be able to find the smaller snack size bananas), arrange them in a blue bucket, and you’ve got a decoration and some party food. MinionBananasMinion Bubble Favors
Yellow bubble containers make the perfect favors for any Minions birthday party. Again, all you need is a black Sharpie to “minion-ize” the container and you are set! I picked up some small, spill-proof bubble tumblers from Target, but you could easily transform any yellow bubble container into a Minion. Affordable, easy, and another dual purpose piece (decoration and favor).

Minion Balloon Faces
You don’t need any helium to have these friendly faces hanging around. Regular yellow, latex balloons are an easy way to add some flair to your party. Blow the balloons up and use your trusty ol’ black Sharpie to add eyes, goggle straps, smiles, and hair. Remember to put the tied end of the balloon at the top. This was actually A LOT of fun as I might have experimented a little with some different Minion facial expressions. You can use ribbon to hang the balloons around your party.

Minion Door Wraps
Get a little crafty and make Minion door covers. We wrapped the top half of the door with a yellow vinyl (thin and cheap) table cover (thanks to help from Scotch Tape) and then used blue to wrap the bottom. We added a black table cover strap for the goggles and cut out circles from white poster board for the eyes. Everything was held together with tape and lasted through the entire party (with 5 year old boys going in and out). We decorated each side of the door independently from the other but you MIGHT be able to do it all at once. I’m not an experienced door wrapper, but this was a pretty successful experiment. It was one of my favorite decorations and really transforms your space into a Minions birthday bash.

DIY Minion Birthday Cake
After baking 3 9-inch round cake layers, we used white icing around the bottom and sides, and covered the top in blue icing. Graham cracker crust crumbs make the perfect sand and can be used to cover about half of your blue “water” on top. For the little guys on top, we actually made a birthday gift into a decoration and used Mini Minion Playsets. Add some mini drink umbrellas, miniature buckets (from the craft store), candy, and even Minions themed graham crackers, and you’ve got a pretty amazing cake.

A Minions themed party is not hard. Just keep in mind that you can use yellow and blue ANYTHING. (Example: Yellow and blue pinwheels are cheap and easy to stick just about anywhere for a little fun flare. Sand buckets are cute serving bowls.) I’m also a big fan of using toys (which are then part of the gifts for the birthday boys) as decoration. I scored two of the talking Despicable Me Minions on sale and just used them as table decoration for the party. Now it’s like these two guys are a part of the family. 😉

Talking Minion Toys

With the release of the movie, there are also a ton of store ready decorations and supplies to help you out. I found the best prices and availability at Target and WalMart. The biggest store bought hit was definitely the pinata. HA! See what I did there? 😉

Minion Party SuppliesAs with any party, don’t get so wrapped up in making it unforgettable that you forget to have fun. It might be a party for your kids, but I guarantee they’ll remember it even more if you’re having a good time too. 🙂
