An open letter to Starbucks – Please bring back your pumpkin bread

October 13, 2013 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

My dear Starbucks,

You and I have a longstanding relationship.  You’ve been a faithful friend and have offered me plenty of drink options during all my phases of life: Vanilla Latte, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Creme Brulee Latte, Coffee Frappacino, Hazelnut Macchiato, Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappacino and my standard, the Chai Tea Latte.

When I worked full time, I frequented you far more than I should have.  Weekly and bi-weekly trips had to be explained to my then-boyfriend/now-husband. Starbucks runs were a regular thing for me and my coworkers.  After I quit my job to stay home with my children, I was thrilled to learn that I could trade credit card points for Starbucks gift cards. SQUEE!  I didn’t have to give you up.

Starbucks run

The day after my son was born, a friend stopped by with a Chai Latte and a piece of pumpkin bread.  I was in heaven. I had a new bundle of joy and my favorite treat.

I remember when you first introduced that pumpkin bread.  It was a holiday only item and I. WAS. OBSESSED.  I seriously had an addiction to it.  When I wanted a snack, to Starbucks I went.

Then you decided to sell it year round.  After my initial reaction of utter delight, I actually became a bit worried.  Surely I had the self control to stop myself from buying it several times a week.

If you look through my social media profile,  you will see countless photos of my visits to your establishments across the country.  If I travel, I find a Starbucks.  When I need to write, I find a Starbucks.  When I’m meeting a friend for coffee, I find a Starbucks.

But last week, I made an earth shattering discovery (yes, I may be being a bit dramatic).  You stopped selling the pumpkin bread in my local stores.  Yes, you replaced it with some copycat loaf of some sort, but truly, it’s not the same.

What have you done?

Surely you realize that this would cause an uproar.  I mean, a little bit of warning would have been nice.  I simply walked into my local Starbucks, eagerly anticipating my latte and pumpkin bread, when WHAM!  Like a brick hit me upside the head, I stood there, blindsided as I stared at a bakery display with nothing in it I recognized.

My barista assured me that I would be happy with the new pumpkin loaf.  “Look, it’s served warm,” she declared.  That didn’t matter to me.  As I sat in my little corner of the cafe and tentatively tried the new loaf, I was incredibly disappointed.  It’s not that it wasn’t good. It was fine.  But I didn’t want fine.  I wanted moist pumpkin decadence.

I wanted my old pumpkin bread.

So I sit here, begging you, pleading with you, to bring back your old bakery items.  Pretty please with a cherry on top.

Thank you for your consideration,

Erin

I’m about to take Big to Starbucks today and am going to ask for the OLD Pumpkin Bread and then pout when they don’t have it. Maybe I’ll even tweet. Should we hashtag it?

I imagine the copycat is cheaper to make but they “serve it warm” to try to mask it. LOL. Sorry the new one isn’t cutting it!

I HEAR YOU!!! The only positive is I’ve probably lost 10 pounds because the new bread is awful, so I don’t feel the need to buy it. I miss the super moist pumpkin bread with the nice crunchy seeds on top.

Our Fred Meyer and Safeway starbucks still carry the bread, so I go there!

I equally share your frustration, disappointment and sadness as I just visited my local Starbucks to discover NO MORE of my seasonal favorite splurge!!!! How could they take away what was the best pumpkin bread I’ve ever tasted…I guess my thighs will thank me! Lol

target – they still sell the old pumpkin bread – the coffee isn’t quite the same, but the pumpkin bread makes it worth it. I almost could have written this letter as I too make daily runs to starbucks for coffee…and at least 4 times a week give in to my pumpkin bread addiction. I agree that all Starbucks should bring back the pumpkin bread and all of the “old” pastries, but I do not agree that the new pastries are fine – they are all disgusting – they all taste the same, and the same being that they all taste like cardboard!!!
