First Foods: Oatmeal, Sweet Potato and Pears, Oh My!

September 8, 2011 By Erin L.

We started solid food.  Woot!  Woot!

I know some people wait awhile before starting their baby on solids, but Miss E. has been waiting for food.  At four months, her eyes followed every move hubby’s fork made and then some.

ready for solid food

So on the eve of her 5 month birthday, out came the baby bowls, spoons and the single grain oatmeal.

SHE INHALED IT (and promptly slept eleven hours!)  Too bad the sleep thing hasn’t continued…we’re back to being up at least once a night.

Baby Oatmeal

We’ve since had some sweet potatoes and a little bit of banana.  Tonight we’re going to have some peas, which always look so incredibly disgusting to me, but Bug always loved them.  (And dudes, check out her bib.  It’s from Target and says “Star of Mommy’s Blog”  LOVE.)

Next on our list?  We’re breaking out the Beaba Babycook.

I didn’t make as much food with Bug as I thought I would.  I had every intention of doing it and we did some….but not enough.  With Miss E. we’re going to do better.  It’s not like it’s hard.  Cut up some food, add it to the Babycook, put the water in the reservoir and steam.  When that’s done, you put the steamed contents into the bowl and blend.  Simple simple.  I’ve already envisioned some yummy zucchini purees and homemade applesauce.

And for back up, we stick with Earth’s Best, Sprout and Happy Baby Food. BUT, I vow to buy LESS packaged baby food than I did with Bug.  You heard it here folks.  Hold me to it.

*********

Today’s Launch Week giveaway is the most AMAZING yet! In honor of Miss E. starting to eat solid food, I am thrilled to be able to give away a Beaba Feeding Suite.  This prize includes a Beaba Babycook, set of multiportions (perfect for storage) and a set of Beaba’s First Stage Spoons.

Retail Value = OVER $200!

Gipsy babycook

To enter, simply leave me a comment telling me what your child’s first food was (or will be).  Extra entry for following @scanchild and @beabausa on Twitter.  Drawing will be via random.org on Thursday, September 15.

My former employer, Scandinavian Child, provided the Beaba products to me at no cost.  I received mine as a baby shower gift.  All opinions are my own and are, in no way, attributed to SCI.

Miss Natalie’s first veggie after cereal was peas, which she didn’t like then but LOVES now! We used our Magic Bullet to make tons of baby food, but wished we had the Beaba. I stockpiled and froze her food and loved knowing exactly what she was eating…good luck! 🙂

Cute bib! Lea’s first thing after cereal was sweet potatoes. Then i think it was peas and who knows after that. She’s a great eater! Likes almost everything and will try anything. Her favorites right now are broccoli and mushrooms (not together, however she’d prob love that! lol)

After cereal, Logan’s first was carrots. A bold choice I think! He actually liked them. I may go the same route with Maggie when the time comes. Or, may do peas or green beans or something like that. Probably definitely a veggie though.

My lil Xavier’s first veggie was peas. Sadly alot of food tries made it everywhere but his mouth, but in result ALOT of priceless pictures. I still laugh looking at the food pictures mishaps and dislikes. Another babe on the way *crosses fingers for veggie lover*, if not more great pics for sure :)) Perhaps homemade baby veggies could be the winner!

  14. Carol B says

I made almost all of Andrew’s food and can’t wait to start making it for Meghan in a few months. I would LOVE to have a Babycook to make it even easier!

  15. Kelly says

    September 9, 2011 at 11:51 am

Zach’s been on rice cereal (added to his bottle) since he was 2 months old, so I guess technically that was his first food. We’ll be starting solid foods in the next month and I think I want his first food to be green beans or peas, followed quickly by sweet potatoes (mainly because I hate them, but they are so healthy, so I really want him to like them)! 🙂

Love Miss E’s bib!! Bug needs a t-shirt to match. 🙂
Both the girls started with the basic rice cereal and never looked back! Neither one of them was picky and would pretty much inhale whatever fruit, veggie or cereal came their way on a spoon.

Marian’s first food was rice cereal, but had to take her off of that due to food sensitivities. We are now only doing sweet potatoes and green beans and I am having to make it. I like having to make it instead of buying it for many reasons, so this might just be the trick to making my life easier.
