This is the story of a pair of brown leggings.
I had a deep, intense need for them. Yet, somehow they kept alluding me. I went to store after store but couldn’t find them anywhere. Tights, yes. But leggings? They were hiding from me, taunting me as I found outfit after outfit that I could wear with them, if they would just show themselves.
By (last) Christmas, I had given up. I put it on my Christmas list and left it up to the gift gods. Alas on Christmas morning, as I was opening up my stocking gifts, I yelped with glee as the first tear of wrapping paper uncovered a hint of brown fabric.
Had my darling husband really done it? Had he found me a pair of brown leggings? It wasn’t possible.
But there they were. In all their wonder and glory.
How had he done it? I didn’t matter; he had succeeded.
I wept with joy, planning a dozen outfits I could wear within the next week. The possibilities were endless.
But as I moved all my stocking stuffers into my bedroom, these beloved leggings somehow got pushed to the side. One afternoon I went searching for them, certain they’d be in the back of my closet or underneath a pile of clothes that are perpetually always on the floor of my room.
Heartbroken, I found nothing.
Months went by. Dust piled up, under beds and dressers. I forgot about these leggings. They left my mind entirely as the thought of them would surely drudge up painful memories of ensembles that never saw the light of day.
Then one day, as I was cleaning up, my eye caught something sticking out from under my dresser. Could it be?
A child suddenly cried out and my attention was diverted.
But that evening my husband saw them too.
“Ahem, are these the same leggings you asked me for last year?” he asked me with total shock in his voice as he held out the UNOPENED package to me.
“Um, yes. Yes they are,” I whispered, suddenly ashamed.
“I went to a BAZILLION stores looking for these. You’ve never even worn them?”
My face went red. I was so ashamed. This sweet, sweet man had trekked miles over our great city looking for these elusive leggings…and I misplaced them.
I hung my head and apologized.
He left the room and I rummaged through my closet, desperate to find an outfit that would work. I swore I’d wear them the very next day. I had to. I just had to.
Weeks went by.
Then suddenly, I turned a year older. A gift card appeared and a shopping trip was had.
I found the perfect sweater. I received the perfect boots.
Finally.
Redemption.
This picture is not perfect. It was taken at 8:00pm after a long day, but it needed to be captured. I had WORN the leggings!
