Small Business Spotlight: Young Living

May 19, 2016 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

*This week I’m excited to feature Molly Stillman and her journey with Young Living. As a new wholesale member myself, this is a great read for anyone interested in essential oils.*
When I first got pregnant in 2012, I immediately became HYPER aware of everything I was putting in my body and everything I was exposing myself to. I suddenly realized that there was this life inside of me that was totally dependent upon me and needed me to help him/her grow… and be healthy! Then when I kept thinking about all the awful stuff I was exposing not only myself, but also our unborn child to at the time…I just felt awful.
So, I started looking into lots of natural alternatives for things here and there. My plan wasn’t to go 100% natural or anything like that… I just started using more herbal remedies, alternative therapies, natural birth and parenting options etc. Yes, I know it sounds SO hippie and even I was rolling my eyes at myself… but I just wanted to be healthy and do the best I could for our child.
Fast forward to when Lilly was born, all that hyper-awareness of everything around me amplified! I kept thinking about germs, toxins, and chemicals, and all the yucky stuff that I wanted to protect my family from. So, I continued to research and learn about other natural therapies, medicines and whatnot.
I started learning about essential oils and at first, I was SUPER skeptical. In fact, I was the most skeptical of the skeptics. I just didn’t buy it. I felt like it was snake oil. I felt like it was all a joke and that this stuff was a big crock. But, I watched a few very close friends start using them and I saw the results they were having and it peeked my interest. I got to the point where I was skeptical, but willing to listen, learn more and do research for myself.
I spent about six months really researching essential oils and their history. I was fascinated with how they date back to biblical and ancient times. Essential oils have literally been used for THOUSANDS of years as natural healing remedies. It’s amazing the more I learned.
When I was doing my research into the different essential oil companies, these were the questions I asked with each company I came across:
Do I know exactly where their oil comes from?
Does the company share where the product comes from?
How is it grown?
How is it distilled?
Can they go to the company farm and see it for themselves?
Does the company harvest and distill with many sample distillations to get the highest amount of therapeutic qualities?
Do they know for certain that the oils they buy are safe to ingest? To put on undiluted?
Are there ANY toxic warnings that come with their oils?
Is there an expiration date?
 Young Living Oils
And the more I learned about Young Living, in particular, the more I felt confident in the company and their products.
So, finally after praying about it, thinking it over, and really trying to decide if using the oils was for me. I decided to give it a go and invest the $150 in the premium starter kit and become a wholesale member of Young Living. I had no intention of doing the business at all at first! In all honesty, the business side of Young Living sort of chose me. I had my doubts about the essential oil world so I used the products and put them through the wringer for about  six months. I had such a great experience with them and loved them! I decided I’d share my experience with a few friends and then write the experience on my blog. Suddenly people started signing up under me. I taught my first class online and had so much fun with it. It ended up just being something I enjoyed and it came naturally!

The community of Young Living members is amazing. There are SO many resources available. Many members have a lot of experience (the company has been around for 25+ years), and the group is very encouraging. No one is pushy or salesy (at least not on my team), and everyone wants to genuinely help other people!

The biggest “challenge” I face, quite honestly, is the “skeptics.” But it isn’t really a challenge for me because I was a skeptic once too! I always share my honest story, my testimonials, and why I genuinely love the products and how they work best for our family. I also realize that Young Living isn’t going to be for everyone, and that’s okay. I won’t ever pressure someone or make them feel like they HAVE to agree with me or like they HAVE to try it.

I love that this “business” gives me flexibility and is ready and waiting for me no matter what. Some business builders work a 40 hour work week doing this job, others much less. I have ebbed and flowed in the past two years. At my peak, I was putting in about 20 hours a week. Right now, I’m in a season of life with two kids where I can’t devote that much time to the business… so I’m only at about 5 hours a week right now (and yet, because of the structure and the residual income, I still make enough to help supplement income for my family.) I love that!

If you’re thinking of getting started with a company like Young Living, I highly suggest you connect with a team that you feel comfortable with and learn as much as you can. Use the products. That’s the BIGGEST thing. Use them and learn as much as you can about them! The more you learn, the more you’ll be able to share with others.
