A letter to be my daughter on her 11th birthday

Lou Bean,

My baby is growing up. This past year has been both amazing and hard. You’ve faced some fears, and dealt with some challenges, but through it all you’ve been a strong, brave girl.

Your 10th year brought fun things like your first sleepaway camp, theater classes, starting dance again, a beach trip, train ride to Charlotte, new friends and even skiing for the first time. It also brought oral surgery, and some hardships with school and your family. But we continue to work through them and you are open to all the solutions that have been presented to you. I am proud of how far you’ve come and the work you’ve put in.

You are the most loving child. You tell us you love us 100,000 times a day. You’ve grown much more appreciative of things, and it makes my heart so happy when you express your gratitude for things.

A huge highlight of your year was having Foreigner share my Halloween Story of your Jukebox Hero costume. I think we listened to that song on repeat for 3 months straight!

The next few years will bring about a ton of changes. You’re going to grow, try things on and figure out who you want to be. Middle school can be both amazing and terrible all in the same breath. I hope it’s kind to you. The amazing thing is as much as the world can be a little too much for you sometimes, you are also a fierce pursuer of justice. I know you’ll stick up for the underdog and fight for what’s right. You are constantly educating your father and me on the ways of the world today.

We love you so much. You are strong, brave and beautiful. Happy Birthday!
