A letter to my son as he becomes a teen

December 15, 2021 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

You are 13 today. I honestly can’t believe it. Wasn’t it just yesterday that you were running around, Buzz Lightyear in hand, yelling “To Infinity and Beyond”?  As much as I miss the toddler and preschool days, I am so enjoying getting to know the young man you are. You’re funny, smart, insightful and really fun to be around.

Baseball is life right now. Over the last year, you played on both a season champion team and a team that struggled. Your leadership was noted and it allowed you to learn and grow as a player.  Just last month you  made the JV middle school team. Practice starts soon and you can’t wait. It’s been a joy to watch you develop as a player over the last year, and I’m excited to see where it takes you.

This last year has been crazy, for everyone really, but you’ve handled it all with grace. I appreciate your flexibility and your willingness to go with the flow. You’ve kept up with school work regardless of online or in-person, and you seem to be enjoying your classes. Orchestra has been a delightful surprise. Dad and I are thrilled that you like playing cello and take the initiative to practice on your own.

This past summer was a big change for our family. You started going to the pool alone to hang out with your friends. As we got into fall, you were going to football games and haunted houses. Heck you had a better social life than I did! I’ve had to remind you a few times that you’re only in 7th grade, and sometimes the answer to your requests will be no. You grumble but so far, no major attitude from it. And although you love to be with your friends, you still love family movie nights and game nights, so that makes my heart happy.

You are a sweet, sweet boy and I love you so much. I’m so glad I get to be your mom and go on this journey called life with you.
