I remember when I used to enjoy grocery shopping. This was back in the day, pre-kids, when you could wander every aisle and leisurely stroll through the store. Yeah, those days are long gone.
A few months ago, when I started my new job, I toyed with the idea of paying for one of those online grocery services. I had a coupon making it $49 a year instead of $99. But alas, I waited too long, the coupon expired and I continued to dread grocery store.
Until now…
This weekend, I have a holiday open house, an open house that requires goodies and fancy drinks. It also typically requires it’s own speciatrip to the grocery store, but not this time.
Walmart has launched and IT’S FREE!. Yes, you read that right. FREE. There’s no yearly fee.
GAME CHANGER!!!
The only small disappointment is that it’s not in all their Supercenters yet, so I had to drive a little further than my closest store. But I didn’t care because I didn’t actually have to go in.
So what do you need to know?
First, download the Walmart Online Grocery app or log in to on your computer..
Next you log in and select a one hour pick-up window on the date of your choice.
Then create an order (you can also do this on your computer) and wait for the magic to happen. Add whatever items you want. (Note, there is a $30 minimum.) If you request alcohol, they’ll ask for your ID upon pick-up. You have the option to allow for substitutions in case your item is out of stock. For instance, if you normally order Nature’s Own Honey Wheat bread, but you’d be okay with another honey wheat bread, simply make sure the “substitution” box is checked.
It was the easiest experience ever. I dropped the kids off at school, checked in on the app (letting Walmart know I was on my way), drove over to the store and within five minutes, I was on my way back home with groceries in my trunk!
WHAT?
This makes planning for any holiday get together easy-peasy. Heck it makes weekly grocery shopping easy peasy too! My family typically does one huge Walmart shop a month. Now we don’t have to wrestle the kids and I don’t EVEN HAVE TO GO IN THE STORE. This is a major deal. Our Walmart is always crazy and the lines are always super long….inevitably I always pick the wrong one. Now it’s not even an issue.
I will say, there is a bit of a learning curve with this to ensure you get everything you need and don’t leave anything off. Luckily Walmart offers a drop down of your typical purchases (which will be great moving forward) AND you have several hours after you place your order to make additions. So when I remembered we needed oatmeal at 10 pm in the middle of watching Workaholics with my husband? I logged in to the app and added it right then. Crisis averted.
Now instead of worrying about getting to the grocery store, I have time to clean the house and make a special festive drink just for the occasion. For this event, I’m going with this strawberry champagne punch. I found several variations on Pinterest, and am combining them to make the one that suits me best.
Strawberry Champagne Punch Recipe
1 bottle Champagne
1 2l bottle of Ginger Ale
1 can frozen lemonade
1 tub frozen strawberries
Mix in a punch bowl and voila! Serve with a garnish to make it fancy.
