As I sat in the audience at a production of Beauty and the Beast last night, I found myself mouthing the words to ALL the songs. Luckily, no sound eeked out or I would have annoyed everyone sitting around me. I knew every single word yet it took me awhile to figure out where I learned them.
In 10th grade we traveled to NYC with our little high school choir. We saw two shows on Broadway – Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast. They were both amazing and I remember being surprised that I preferred Beauty over Phantom. I’d had the Phantom soundtrack for years, but for me, the show didn’t quite pack the punch that Beauty did.
I love musical theater. I love getting lost in the story, in the melodies, in the dancing.
Since having kids, I don’t get to see as much theater as I would like For one, it’s expensive. And it takes time to go.
But every time I see a show I feel like I’m at home.
I long for the day that I can take my children to shows. I hope they will love it as much as I do.
I know that there will come a time when I can return to the theater more regularly, when I might actually (GASP) have time to audition and maybe, just maybe, someday I will grace the stage again.
For now, I’ve got my Broadway station blaring on Pandora. I’m belting songs like Home from Beauty and the Beast, I Dreamed a Dream from Les Mis and Heaven Help My Heart from Chess.
It’ll have to do… for now.
