If you have young children, the RDU Airport Observation Park is definitely a place you want to check out. Located near the General Aviation Terminal and the Air Traffic Control Tower, the park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
My children are fascinated by airplanes and I’m not sure there’s anything better than a close-up view of watching them take-off and land. It can be loud and/or windy depending on the weather, but the kids never seem to mind.
The park has picnic tables, a nice jungle gym play area (be warned; it’s got sand!), a fantastic kid sized runway and lots of open space for running. It also has rest rooms, so no worries there! We like to take an afternoon snack and hit up the park in time for the afternoon flights. We spend some time on the playground and then hit up the observation deck to watch the planes.

If you enjoy history or like to read about different types of airplanes, you’ll enjoy the plaques around the deck that tell you a little bit more about the RDU airport and types of planes that have flown there.
Tip: Check the flight schedule at rdu.com before you come to make sure you’ll actually see some planes.
