When sleep eludes you

March 12, 2013 By Erin L. 2 Comments

Sleep has never been something that comes easy for me. I lay awake at night, listening to the sounds of my house for long after I’ve turned off the lights. It’s highly annoying.

Some nights I luck out and fall asleep after a mere 10 minutes, but usually it’s 20 or even 30. My mind wanders to the events of the day or the to-do list of tomorrow and no matter how hard I try to shut my brain down, it seems impossible. My husband, who is snoring a few seconds after our last good night, always tells me to just make my mind blank.

I don’t know how to DO that!

The one (ok, two) time that I can remember falling asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow was my first night home from the hospital after my kids were born. Of course, I was up two hours later with a newborn, so I’m not sure that really counts.

Lately, I’ve started taking melatonin on nights that I feel my mind racing, not often but maybe once a week or a few times a month. It seems to help.

I realize that me playing Dice With Friends on my phone is probably not helping. I’d be better off reading a book to wind down. Sometimes I remember that. More often than not, I don’t.

I drink my Sleepy Time tea and pray.

But then my husband is snoring and I’m laying there trying to pretend it’s not annoying the crap out of me. It’s not his fault I can’t sleep. I feel bad waking him just to tell him to roll over. So I nudge him, kick him lightly and when all else fails say loudly “honey, move to your other side.” Most nights he barely registers me talking, but sometimes he gets mad at me. Oh well. What can you do?

Last night I tried my best to focus on nothing and ignore the snoring. I only kicked him three times. That’s progress right?

Where’s my gold star?

Any advice on my sleep problems? I’ll take whatever I can get.

I have to get to bed way before my husband if I have any hope of falling asleep being the snoring – excuse me, loud breathing, ahem – becomes too disruptive. If I’m asleep (or almost there) when he comes to bed, I seem to be able to sleep through it. If we go to bed at the same time – forget it. I’ll just sleep in the guest room, thanks.

I have to give myself enough time to wind down or I’m exactly the same. Usually the days are so busy I squeeze every last minute until bedtime and I’m genuinely tired so that helps a ton. Also, I always fall asleep faster on my workout days ~ works like a charm =) Luckily DH is a night owl so I’m out before he falls asleep thus we avoid any snoring issues =)
