A Lot Has Changed in Ten Years

October 22, 2010 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

Tomorrow I am leaving for my ten year college reunion.  Ten years ago last May, I walked across the stage at Furman University and received my diploma, ready and eager to take on the world.

I left my closest friends, the only life I’d known for four years and came home to Raleigh – to my mom, to my then boyfriend (now husband) and to the unknown.  I was excited and terrified all at the same time.

Now that seems SO long ago.   I can’t get over how YOUNG and naive I was about the world.  I think back to how stressed I was over exams, professors, activities and just want to slap myself silly. My biggest worries were whether or not to get up for my 8:00 class, planning events for my sorority and learning music for our Furman Singers tour. I didn’t know the definition of stress.  Oh young Erin, the things I could teach you.
I got lucky finding a job.  The neighbor I used to babysit for worked at a PR firm and within a few weeks, I had a paid internship for the summer.  That internship turned into a full time job where I was molded, honed my skills and spent the next five years mastering the world of PR, marketing communications and media.
When I came back to Raleigh, I didn’t know what would happen with me and the boy.  I honestly didn’t know if we’d last or if the second we lived in the same city (after two years long distance) we’d crack and break apart.  But we didn’t.  We lasted.  On Saturday, we’ll have been married six years and I still love him every bit as fiercely as I did back then….in fact, even more so.  And those flutters I got when he showed up on my doorstep every visit?  I still get them when he walks in the door from a long day at work.

I’m looking forward to walking back onto that beautiful campus.  I’m eager to show my son the lake, the mall, and to take him to his first football game ever (Go Paladins!). I’m anxious to see old friends, to hug those dearest to my memories and squeeze on their children.

Ten years.  So much has changed; yet so much of me is still the same.
