First Class All the Way

June 25, 2010 By Erin L. Leave a Comment

You know those movies where the country farm girl comes to the BIG city and can’t believe her eyes at all the wonderment around her? Yeah, that’s me today, sitting in first class on my way to Utah for the EVO Conference.

Now, let’s get one thing straight. I do not normally sit in first class; in fact, this is my first First Class experience in my entire life and it only came about from a fairly substantial debacle that caused a great deal of anxiety. But regardless of the drama, here I sit in my first class seat on the leg from Dallas to Salt Lake City.

What the deuce people? This is classy.

I was totally stoked (like a kid in a candy store) about the additional leg room and larger seats. That I expected. I even giggled a bit when the flight attendants brought out the hand towels. (I had heard rumors that this happened.) But when they brought out our lunch on real plates with real glasses, I about died. Then we were offered wine with lunch.

Wow! I guess you really do get what you pay for. (On second thought, my coach tickets are pretty freakin’ expensive these days so I wonder what these tickets typically go for. I would guess more than a high car payment.)

As I drank my ice water from my cute little glass and ate my very nicely prepared chicken sandwich with side salad (fresh lettuce !) and yummy naked pita chips, I got to thinking “This is the WAY to travel!” But then I thought about all the practical things that I want/need – clothes for the family, fixer upper items for the house, a new HVAC system. REALITY CHECK.

My money is probably better spent elsewhere (although if I traveled every week or worked for some big fancy schmancy, rolling in the dough giant cooperation, I would definitely consider flying first class all the time.)

This will probably be the first and LAST time I fly first class – unless I get some sweet upgrade in the future or if I make it famous one day and land some sweet gig on TV or in a movie. Until then, I’ll be chillin’ in coach with the rest of the world sipping my apple juice out of my plastic cup all the while being irritated by the loud talker behind me who keeps bumping my seat.

(Oooooh, WARM chocolate chip cookies, are you KIDDING me? )

I got magically upgraded on my flight home from London after doing grad school abroad. It is truly incredible — I stayed awake the whole way so as not to miss any of the treats.
