This past weekend, my best friend and I took a girl’s trip to New York. No kids. Lots of shopping, Broadway and FOOD. Friday night, we saw Book of Mormon (so FUNNY!) which put us into the theater mood. Then on Saturday, we took part in a tour of awesome dessert places in the theater district.
Dessert PLUS Broadway? You can’t go wrong with that combination.
We met our dessert tour guide, Nathalie, from SugarTooth Tours at our first location, Ben’s Deli on 38th. It was the perfect start to the tour as we sat in a booth with hot coffee and a yummy macaroon and introduced ourselves. There was only one other couple on the tour with us, making it the perfect size group to hear and ask questions as we walked. Our guide is in a local theater troupe and regularly auditions for plays, commercial and voice-over work, so hearing her perspective on everything was awesome.
Then we headed to our next stop, Little Pie Company. It’s owned by Arnold Wilkerson, a theater actor who got his start in NYC and performed in the original production of HAIR.
We walked in and immediately I wanted to stay here all day. It smelled SO good. We got to try their famous Sour Cream Apple Walnut Pie. I’ll admit, I wasn’t super excited as I don’t usually like nuts in my baked goods, but OH MY HEAVENS. Y’all, this pie was to die for. The apples are thinly sliced, which makes all the difference. I loved it so much that I actually ordered one for Thanksgiving next week. I can’t wait to share it with my family.
Then we hit up Schmackery’s Cookie Shop. They have an awesome assortment of cookies, plus brownies and this yummy Krispy Swamp Treat. Coleen tried the Candied Yam Cookie, which I initially balked at but guess what? It was delicious.
The next location was Junior’s. We got to try their authentic New York Cheesecake. It was SO ridiculously creamy and delicious. YUM!!
Our next to last stop was Amy’s Bread. Here we got to try a traditional Black & White Cookie. I thought I’d tried one before but apparently that was a half moon cookie, which looks similar, but is a different recipe. The trick to the Black & White is to get equal parts in each bite – both chocolate and vanilla.
Our final stop gave us the chance to try a famous New York Chocolate Egg Cream at Cosmic Cafe. I’ve always wondered about them but couldn’t get past the name. I had no idea it doesn’t actually have any egg in it! It’s seltzer, chocolate syrup and super cold milk, so basically it’s a fizzy chocolate milk. It was good, but I probably wouldn’t order it on my own.
We ended the tour with full, happy bellies. It was such a wonderful way to spend 2.5 hours, eating our way through the theater district. If you’re looking for something fun to do on your next NYC trip, I highly recommend this. It’s $50 per person, which I think is a great price. You totally get your money’s worth. Yummy sweets paired with Broadway trivia? Please and thank you.
I give it a standing ovation.
This post was not sponsored in any way. It was just so awesome that I felt others need to know about it.
