I have a love/hate relationship with my hair. I imagine most women do. We’re never happy with what we have.
Mine is naturally wavy, which really means it frizzes fairly easily and can’t just be left to do it’s own thing. If I don’t blow dry it, it’s a hot moss. Of course, blow drying does damage. Fun times.
I’ve lived my entire life having to wash it every day. It is quite oily and going over 24 hours is just not possible. At least I didn’t think it was. A few months ago, I had a long conversation with a hair stylist about shampooing. She told me if I tried not shampooing for a week or two, my hair would get used to it and the oil production in my hair follicles would slow down.
I figured I’d give it a shot.
For two weeks, I washed every other day. The only thing that meant was that day 2 was spent with my hair up, in a pony tail. I didn’t notice a difference. I tried wetting my hair and restyling…still oily. I tried dry shampoo. That only made my pony tail look a little nice. I still couldn’t leave my hair down.
I was frustrated and annoyed.
Then my former boss sent me the name of a new hair salon to check out. (Plum Hair Atelier for all you Raleigh folk!) Ashley, one of the owners, invited me in for a blow out and a chance to try a new hair cleanser called Purely Perfect, which wouldn’t be hard on my hair and would replace both my shampoo AND conditioner. Well, you didn’t have to ask me twice. I went in to check it out.
Created by Michael Gordon, the founder of Bumble & Bumble, Purely Perfect came from the desire for a product that lacked detergents or needed to foam (both which dry out your hair and can cause more damage than good).
It’s a bit pricey but…
It’s not cheap. Forty dollars will get you an 8 oz bottle, which I think will last you at least 3 months, depending on how long your hair is. I’ve been using mine since December and still have 1/3 of the bottle left. Of course, I don’t take it to the gym (I use a sulfate free shampoo from Aveeno), so I haven’t used it every single day. But keep in mind that it replaces both your shampoo and your conditioner AND it’s good for your hair. Plus everyone in your family can use it — kids included. It’s biodegradable and is formulated without a trace of detergent using pure Aloe Vera and essential oils instead. I love the smell!
A bit of a learning curve
The biggest challenge is getting used to having no lather. You only need a few pumps to cleanse your entire head. It takes a few days to get used to that and I have to admit, I still try to make it lather.
Purely Perfect also offers a Foundation Cream and a Smooth Finish product. If you have fine hair like me, then the Foundation Cream is too heavy and will weight your hair down. But for those with thick or curly hair (like my sister), it’s a dream and can replace several other products you may be using (gels, oils, etc).
After two months, I’m still getting used to it. But I like it. I like the way my hair feels when I’m blow drying it. It’s soft and NOT frizzy. I used to use a hair thickener every day, but am only using it now on special occasions.
If you’re looking to try something new that’s safe to use on your hair EVERY day, then consider checking out Purely Perfect’s Cleansing Cream. Your hair will thank you.
